The item is called Crushed Sand

This is the whole reason people cannot find it. Search the game for "sand" and you will not see an item by that name. The resource is Crushed Sand, it stacks to 6000, and its economic value is 50.

Two ways to get it

• Harvest it. Seventeen block types yield Crushed Sand when you break them, and the productive ones are man-made rather than terrain: sand pallet bags, military barriers and drywall stacks. Hitting desert ground is the slow way.
• Smelt glass in a forge. Four units of glass return one Crushed Sand. It is unlocked from the start, needs no perk, and takes one second of craft time. If you are sitting on broken glass from clearing a POI, that is your sand supply.

What consumes it

Crushed Sand is an ingredient in more recipes than most people realise: concrete mix (with small stone and cement, in a cement mixer), glass blocks and bulletproof glass blocks, sandbags, asphalt, gravel, scope lenses, plaster casts and empty jars. Glass goes both ways here: you can smelt glass down into sand and build glass back out of it.
