Armor & Set Bonuses

7 Days to Die's armor system replaced discrete clothing pieces with integrated armor sets in the 1.0 update; the system has continued through V2.6 with 13 sets across three weight classes. Equipping multiple pieces from the same set unlocks set bonuses on top of each piece's individual armor rating. This guide covers every set, its bonus, and the practical pick-by-playstyle recommendations.

How the Armor System Works

  • Three weight classes: Light (least cumbersome, lowest armor rating), Medium (balanced), Heavy (most protection, biggest stamina/movement penalty).
  • Six quality levels: like weapons and tools, armor pieces come in quality 1–6. Higher quality means better armor rating and stronger set-bonus values.
  • Set bonuses scale with how many pieces you wear — partial sets give a partial bonus; the full set gives the maximum.
  • Mod slots on each piece let you slot armor mods (insulation, mobility, durability, etc.) — this is on top of the set bonus.

Light Armor Sets

Lower armor rating, lower stamina cost. Picks for runners, scavengers, and stealth players.

SetBonus
LumberjackWood harvest 2× and reduced stamina use with axes — top pick for early-game wood / log farming.
PreacherCritical-injury resistance and infection-chance resistance (5–100% by quality). The "don't die from one bad fight" set.
RogueMore cash and dukes in loot. Pairs well with quest grinding.
AthleticLess food and water consumption. The exploration / open-world traversal set.
Enforcer.44 magnum reload speed and .44 damage boost. A pistol specialist's set.

Medium Armor Sets

Balanced protection and mobility. The most popular weight class for most playstyles.

SetBonus
FarmerExtra health and food recovery from food consumed. Strong for self-sustained survival builds.
BikerArmor rating bonus and reduced fuel consumption on Minibikes/Motorcycles. The road-warrior set.
ScavengerLoot Stage increase (2–20% by quality). Better loot tables in containers — pairs perfectly with Trader quest grinds.
RangerReload speed boost on revolvers and lever-action rifles. Western-themed marksman set.
CommandoRecovery-item use speed (25–50% by quality) — bandages, painkillers, casts apply faster. The "stay in the fight longer" set.
AssassinDecreases enemy search duration. The stealth set — easier to break line of sight after being detected.

Heavy Armor Sets

Highest protection, highest stamina/movement cost. The melee tank and dedicated combat sets.

SetBonus
MinerReduced mining-tool degradation. The dedicated harvester set — pairs with mining perks for a workaholic build.
NomadReduced stamina-recovery cost. Mitigates the heavy-class stamina penalty for movement-focused builds.
NerdLess weapon and tool degradation (10–35% by quality). The "your gear lasts longer" set — hugely valuable in extended runs.
RaiderCritical-injury resistance. Heavy-class equivalent of Preacher's lighter version.

Upgrading Quality

Armor follows the standard 6-tier quality progression that weapons and tools use. Higher quality = better armor rating and stronger set-bonus values. Sources of high-quality armor pieces:

  • Tier 4–5 Trader quest reward boxes — the highest-quality drops in the game, weighted toward your current Loot Stage.
  • POI loot containers in higher-tier biomes (Wasteland especially) — see Biomes & Loot Stage.
  • Trader inventory — Traders rotate stock daily; quality 5 and 6 pieces appear at higher Game Stage / Trader Tier.
  • Crafting with sufficient ranks in the relevant attribute perk and the right schematic / magazine progression — see Magazine Crafting Progression.

Armor Mods

Each piece has mod slots that accept armor-specific mods independent of the set bonus. Common mod types:

  • Insulation mods: Cold and Hot weather resistance (essential for Snow / Desert biomes).
  • Mobility mods: stamina cost reduction, movement speed.
  • Durability mods: longer time before repair is needed.
  • Pocket mods: extra inventory slots.
  • Padding / plating: damage reduction.

Mods are independent of set bonuses — you can keep your Scavenger set's loot bonus while modding individual pieces for warmth or speed.
