Wood Log Farming & Trees

Wood is the most-consumed resource in 7 Days to Die after stone. You need it for every workstation, every base block at Tier 1, every horde-night reinforcement, and every fuel run. This guide covers tree types, harvesting tools, and the fastest farm route.

Tree Types & Yield

What's a "Wood Log"?

The full Wood Log item drops when you fully chop a large tree. Each large tree drops ~1–3 logs depending on size and your perks. Wood Logs are used for:

  • Building blocks: Wood Log Spike Trap (1 log) — the cheapest blood-moon trap.
  • Smelting: Burns longer than regular wood in Forge fuel slots (~7× the duration of a single Wood unit).
  • Trader quests: Tier 2–4 quests sometimes ask for 5–25 Wood Logs.
  • Crafting: Some advanced workstation upgrades require logs.

Best Harvesting Tools

ToolSpeedYield
Stone AxeSlowLow (1.0×)
Iron FireaxeMedium1.5×
Steel FireaxeFast2.0×
ChainsawVery fast2.5× + faster animation

The Chainsaw is the wood-farming endgame tool. Mechanical parts are required to craft it (see our Mechanical Parts guide) but it pays itself off in 1–2 farming runs.

Best Farming Routes

The Forest Biome Triangle

The Forest biome has the highest tree density. Pick a 3-cell area:

  1. Set up a vehicle (Bicycle minimum, 4x4 ideal) and a Wood Log Storage Box near a forest patch.
  2. Chop in a triangle pattern to keep travel distance short.
  3. Each large pine drops 40–80 wood + 1–3 logs. A productive 30-minute run yields 1500–3000 wood.

Lumberjack Perk

Under the Strength attribute, Lumberjack ranks add:

  • +5% to +25% wood yield per rank
  • Faster chop animation
  • Rank 4 lets you 1-shot small trees
  • Rank 5 unlocks the highest-tier yield bonus + crit chance for Wood Logs

Combined with the Chainsaw, max Lumberjack triples your effective hourly wood income.

Tree Respawn (Regrow Mode)

By default, cut trees do NOT regrow. If you want regrowing trees, the host needs to enable regrowmode via main-menu code, OR run on a server that has it set in serverconfig.xml. With regrow mode:

  • 10% of cut trees grow back while you sleep, IF the stump is uncut.
  • Trees grow back at the same biome they were cut in.
  • Useful for long-term bases since you don't deforest your area in 30 in-game days.

Wood From Other Sources

  • Wooden POI structures — abandoned shacks, fences, decks. Demolish with a Fireaxe for ~1–3 wood per block.
  • Wood Frames placed by other players (multiplayer raid loot).
  • Wooden Crates / Container Loot — small chance of dropping 5–10 wood.
  • Tree Stumps — chop the leftover stump for 5–10 wood + a chance at saplings.

Common Mistakes

  • Chopping with a Pickaxe — works but yield is half. Always carry a Fireaxe.
  • Forgetting to chop the stump — you leave wood + sapling chance behind.
  • Wood farming in Wasteland — dead trees give half the yield of pine. Stay in Forest biome for primary runs.
  • Skipping Lumberjack perk — +25% yield is the difference between making 30 cobblestone walls and 38 per run.

Stop deforesting your map. Host a 7 Days to Die server with the team behind this wiki and run a steady-state community campaign.
