Biomes & Loot Stage

Every 7 Days to Die map has the same four biomes: Forest, Desert, Snow, Wasteland. Picking the right biome for your base affects everything — resource availability, weather damage, zombie aggression, and the loot stage that drops in containers. This guide ranks them by difficulty and explains the loot-stage system.

The Four Biomes — Difficulty Ranking

From easiest to hardest:

RankBiomeDifficultyWhy
1ForestEasiestMany living animals (rabbits, pigs, bears, stags) for food. Fewer zombies, weaker variants. Abundant wood, plant fiber, and water.
2DesertMediumLess wood, more vultures. Gas stations, abandoned campsites, water towers, and Wild West-themed Ghost Towns with strong loot. Heat damage without water.
3SnowHardCold damage destroys early-game survival without proper clothing. Wolves, bears. Fewer animals overall.
4WastelandHardestLargest zombie hordes on the map. Radiated zombies. Densest dangerous POIs. Best loot stage as compensation.

Loot Stage by Biome

Loot stage is a hidden multiplier that scales loot quality with difficulty. The harder the biome, the higher the loot stage tier the game pulls from.

BiomeLoot ModifierWhat That Means
ForestBase (1.0×)Standard tier-by-level loot. Fine for early game.
Desert+15%Slightly better quality + variety. Good for mid-game runs.
Snow+25%Notably better gear chances. Worth braving for tier-3 quests.
Wasteland+40%Top-tier loot floor. Where endgame players grind for tier-6 gear.

Numbers approximate based on community data — varies by Game Stage and biome variant.

Biome-by-Biome Survival Tips

Forest (Starter Biome)

  • Spawn here if possible. Almost always your safest first home.
  • Best biome for hunting food (deer, pigs, bears for meat + leather).
  • Plenty of dead trees for wood, abundant plant fiber.
  • Wolves and bears are the main biome-specific threats — manageable with a bow + spear.

Desert

  • Run from gas station to gas station — high concentration of high-loot POIs.
  • Look for Ghost Towns: Wild West-themed clusters with very strong loot.
  • Always carry water; heat damage stacks fast in midday.
  • Vultures are aggressive air units. Bow them down.

Snow

  • Do NOT spawn here without thick clothes. Cold damage kills naked players in minutes.
  • Coat + hood + boots minimum, padded armor ideal.
  • Indoor POIs are warmer than open terrain — stick to buildings during night.
  • Higher chance of finding tier-2/3 weapons in lootable containers vs forest.

Wasteland

  • Endgame only. Tier-6 zombies, radiated variants, biggest hordes.
  • Best for loot-stage farming once you have steel armor + auto-shotgun.
  • Screamer farming: light multiple forges in the wasteland to attract Screamers, who summon waves of zombies for non-stop combat XP.
  • The biome where blood-moon hordes feel the most overwhelming.

Biome Badge System

The "biome badge" appears on your HUD when you cross biome boundaries. It indicates:

  • Current biome name — useful for new players still learning the map.
  • Active biome modifiers — e.g. cold tick in snow, heat tick in desert.
  • Loot stage shift if your difficulty changed.

The badge briefly flashes when you cross a boundary. If your view distance is set high, you can pre-position your character to enter the high-loot Wasteland for a single quest, then retreat.

Biome Layout & Map Generation

Each generated map has roughly equal portions of all four biomes. The layout depends on your seed (see our World Seeds guide):

  • Wasteland is centrally placed on most generated maps — high-difficulty zone surrounded by easier biomes.
  • Snow biome is typically at the top of the map (north).
  • Desert is typically at the bottom-right (south-east).
  • Forest fills the gaps between hostile biomes.

Strategic Base Placement by Biome

StrategyBiome ChoiceWhy
Pure survivalForestLowest difficulty, most resources, easiest blood moons.
Loot grindingWasteland edgeTop loot stage but with a forest biome retreat 100m away.
Roleplay / casualForest near desert borderBoth biomes accessible from one base.
Hardcore challengeWasteland centreConstant pressure. Prove you can survive anything.

Common Mistakes

  • Spawning a new save and immediately walking into the Wasteland — instant death.
  • Skipping desert because of heat — you miss out on tier-2 POI loot.
  • Building base in Snow without insulation — constant cold tick eats food/water reserves.
  • Treating biome boundaries as decorative — they meaningfully change zombie spawns and difficulty.
