A backpack in 7 Days to Die V3.3 adds 2 to 48 inventory slots on top of the new 48-slot grid, depending on its size and quality, so the biggest bag holds 96. Small, Medium and Large backpacks each come in quality 1 to 6. You craft them at a workbench once Pack Rat magazines have raised your Backpacks crafting skill to 5, 40 or 75, or you find them in Savage Country boxes. Traders sell the magazines, not the backpacks. Every number on this page is read from the V3.3.0 game files, build 25661908, the stable build since 5 October 2026.
TL;DR
The base inventory is now an 8x6 grid: 48 slots, of which 32 can be filled before you are encumbered.
Small backpack: +2 to +16 slots. Medium: +18 to +32. Large: +34 to +48. A quality 6 Large is the only way to reach the 96-slot cap.
Crafting: one Pack Rat Magazine raises the Backpacks skill by 1. Small unlocks at 5, Medium at 40, Large at 75, and quality 6 Large at 100.
Loot: backpacks only drop from Savage Country boxes, from loot stage 30 (Small), 88 (Medium) and 146 (Large).
Extra slots are encumbered slots. Pack Mule rank 5 frees 56 more, which still leaves 8 of a 96-slot bag slowing you down.
The backpack goes in its own equipment slot. Each size and quality adds a fixed number of slots to the 48-slot grid; the game caps the bag at 96 slots, which is exactly where a quality 6 Large lands.
| Backpack | Quality 1 | Quality 2 | Quality 3 | Quality 4 | Quality 5 | Quality 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | +2 (50 slots) | +4 (52 slots) | +6 (54 slots) | +8 (56 slots) | +12 (60 slots) | +16 (64 slots) |
| Medium | +18 (66 slots) | +20 (68 slots) | +22 (70 slots) | +24 (72 slots) | +28 (76 slots) | +32 (80 slots) |
| Large | +34 (82 slots) | +36 (84 slots) | +38 (86 slots) | +40 (88 slots) | +44 (92 slots) | +48 (96 slots) |
Two things the table makes plain. A low-quality Medium beats any Small, and a low-quality Large beats any Medium, so the size matters more than the quality. And backpacks take no mods: each one has zero mod slots, whatever its quality.
Before V3.3 the grid was 9x5, 45 slots, with 27 of them free of encumbrance. V3.3 raised that to 48 and 32.
Backpacks have their own crafting skill, shown as Backpacks in the crafting skill list. Each Pack Rat Magazine you read raises it by one level, and the skill goes to 100. These are the skill levels at which each size and quality becomes craftable:
| Backpack | Quality 1 | Quality 2 | Quality 3 | Quality 4 | Quality 5 | Quality 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 | 30 |
| Medium | 40 | 45 | 50 | 55 | 60 | 65 |
| Large | 75 | 80 | 85 | 90 | 95 | 100 |
So your first Small backpack takes five magazines, and the best bag in the game takes the full hundred. Intellect Mastery at rank 3, or wearing the Nerd Outfit, gives each magazine a chance to count twice, the same bonus every crafting magazine gets. Separately, The Fun Pimps staff confirmed a bug report during the 3.3 experimental that a Pack Rat Magazine could count as two; the report is still listed as confirmed rather than fixed, so your skill may climb faster than this table assumes.
All three are crafted at a workbench. Ingredient counts rise with the quality you craft; these are the quality 1 and quality 6 versions at the default Crafting Input setting.
| Backpack | Quality 1 recipe | Quality 6 recipe | Base craft time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 Sewing Kit, 5 Cloth | 6 Sewing Kit, 25 Cloth, 5 Forged Iron | 10 s |
| Medium | 7 Sewing Kit, 25 Leather, 5 Forged Iron | 12 Sewing Kit, 50 Leather, 30 Forged Iron | 30 s |
| Large | 13 Sewing Kit, 50 Leather, 20 Scrap Polymers, 5 Forged Steel | 18 Sewing Kit, 75 Leather, 95 Scrap Polymers, 30 Forged Steel, 1 Legendary Parts | 60 s |
Sewing kits are the common thread. Joel, the clothes and armor trader, stocks 3 to 5 per restock and the other four traders 1 to 2, and Savage Country boxes can hold one or two.
In the V3.3 loot tables the backpacks appear in exactly one place: the Savage Country box, the clothing-store crate. Nothing else lists them: not traders, not airdrops, not zombie bags. Each size is gated by loot stage:
Their quality rolls on the same template as armor, so it climbs with loot stage too. Below stage 30 the box can still give you Pack Rat magazines, cloth and sewing kits, which is the faster road to an early Small backpack anyway.
A backpack adds slots, not freedom. Of the base 48 slots, 32 (four rows) can be filled without penalty. Every item past that limit is encumbering you, and each one cuts your movement by 1.1%: the game multiplies the count of encumbering items by 0.011 and takes it off your mobility. A full 96-slot bag with nothing to offset it is 64 items over, about 70% slower. Your toolbelt and worn clothing never count, only the bag.
| Source | V3.2 | V3.3 |
|---|---|---|
| Base free slots | 27 of 45 | 32 of 48 |
| Pack Mule perk, ranks 1 to 5 (Strength 1 to 5) | +3, +6, +10, +14, +18 | +4, +12, +24, +40, +56 |
| Armor Pocket, Double, Triple and Quad Pocket mods | +1, +2, +3, +4 each | +1, +2, +3, +4 each |
| Lumberjack, Scavenger or Nomad outfit (chest piece) | +1 to +5 at quality 1 to 5, +10 at quality 6 | unchanged |
| Chicken Nuggets, while the buff lasts | +27 | +48 (the item card still says 27) |
| Steroids, while the buff lasts | limit set to 50 | limit set to 96 (the item card still says 50) |
| Night Stalker Vol 4, at night | +27 | +27 |
| All seven volumes of The Fireman's Almanac, in the burnt forest and wasteland | +45 | +45 |
The last two still promise "never encumbered" in their descriptions. On a 45-slot V3.2 bag that was true; with a big V3.3 backpack and no Pack Mule it no longer is, because 32 + 27 is 59 and 32 + 45 is 77.
Encumbered items when the bag is completely full, by Pack Mule rank:
| Bag | Slots | Rank 0 | Rank 1 | Rank 2 | Rank 3 | Rank 4 | Rank 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No backpack | 48 | 16 | 12 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Small, quality 6 | 64 | 32 | 28 | 20 | 8 | 0 | 0 |
| Medium, quality 6 | 80 | 48 | 44 | 36 | 24 | 8 | 0 |
| Large, quality 6 | 96 | 64 | 60 | 52 | 40 | 24 | 8 |
Worked example. A quality 6 Large backpack with Pack Mule maxed gives 32 + 56 = 88 free slots, so the last 8 items still slow you by 8.8%. Two Quad Pocket mods (+4 each) close the gap, and so does a quality 6 Lumberjack, Scavenger or Nomad outfit on its own (+10). That is why pocket mods matter again in V3.3 after a version in which Pack Mule alone was enough.
Servers and single-player worlds can scale the base 32 with the Encumbrance Slots sandbox option. Its steps multiply the base: Disabled 10x (no encumbrance at all), Low 1.35x, Default 1x, High 0.7x, Very High 0.35x and Full 0x, which leaves only perks, mods and outfits to free slots. Pack Mule and the other bonuses are added after the multiplier.
Do not confuse it with the Backpack Crafting sandbox option, which has nothing to do with backpack items: it controls which recipes you can craft from your inventory without a workstation.
Unequipping a backpack does not delete what was in its extra slots. When The Fun Pimps staff tested this on the official forum on 5 October 2026, unequipping a quality 6 Large backpack dropped the items from the added slots in a dropped backpack on the ground, and re-equipping the bag and picking that up recovered everything. Swap bags somewhere safe, and do not swap mid-fight.
That is the game's own message when a purchase cannot fit. On V3.3 it can also show up with a nearly empty inventory. In a report on the official forum on 6 October 2026, a player on an unmodded 3.3 game got it on every purchase with an empty inventory. The workaround suggested there, which the reporter accepted, is to move your Dukes from the toolbelt into the main inventory. It is not on the developers' known-issues list yet, so treat it as a workaround, not an explanation.
A known issue The Fun Pimps list for V3.3.0. Until it is fixed, move the item into your inventory and sell it from there. The same list warns that the sell count might not display correctly.
Confirmed by staff on the official forum: with the Trader Buy Limit sandbox option set to None, selling an odd-sized stack of a material can stop that trader buying it. Their workarounds are to wait for the trader's next restock or to avoid selling stacks above 10,000.
Also on the known-issues list. Move the food or water into your inventory first.
That is Night Stalker Vol 4 working as designed (+27 slots at night). A player reported it as a bug and staff moved the report to Not a Bug.
V3.3 changed the inventory window files as well as items, loot, recipes and progression, so a mod built for 3.2 that touches the inventory needs a 3.3 build. Check the PhD Bigger Backpack page and the 2026 mod status tracker before installing one.
From 2 (a quality 1 Small) to 48 (a quality 6 Large), on top of the 48-slot base grid. The cap is 96 slots.
No. No trader stocks the backpacks themselves in V3.3. They sell the Pack Rat Magazine you need to craft them, and the pocket mods that remove encumbrance.
Pack Mule rank 5 frees 56 slots on top of the base 32, so 88 in total. A bag bigger than that, a quality 5 or 6 Large, still has encumbered slots. Add pocket mods or a Lumberjack, Scavenger or Nomad outfit.
One per skill level: 5 for the first Small backpack, 40 for the first Medium, 75 for the first Large and 100 for a quality 6 Large.
No. The items in the extra slots drop in a bag on the ground, and you can pick them up again after re-equipping a backpack.
