Running a Server for Friends

You can keep things simple while still being reliable. Here is a weekend-friendly setup that doesn’t turn into a support job.
Quick start
- Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD on a spare PC or VPS.
- Forward ports 26900–26902 UDP/TCP or run everyone through a VPN.
- Set a password and keep the server off the public list.
Settings that help small groups
- Keep view distance moderate (8–10) to reduce stutters when people roam.
- Set
MaxSpawnedZombies to a level the host can handle during horde nights.
- Adjust
BloodMoonFrequency so it aligns with your play cadence.
Backups and restarts
- Automated daily restart with a short warning avoids long-term memory creep.
- Back up
Saves/ after each session or before adding mods.
Admin habits
- One trusted admin is enough; log into telnet only over LAN/VPN.
- Post a short rules list in the MOTD (no base griefing, stash locations, restart times).
