Q: Does Undead Legacy work on V3.0 to V3.3?

No. Undead Legacy's newest line targets game V2.6, and the stable line is on Alpha 20.7, so neither runs on a 3.x build - not V3.0, not V3.1 Henpocalypse, not V3.2 and not V3.3, which became Steam's default on 5 October 2026. Subquake's plan for 3.x is a compatibility-only UL 2.8, with no date yet. Pin the game branch your UL line needs, which also means you cannot join a 3.x server while you do.

Q: Does Undead Legacy work on V2.6?

Yes. Subquake's experimental line - currently UL 2.7.40 (2026.09.28) - runs on game V2.6 b14 and ships as a two-part download where both parts are required. It is genuinely experimental: builds land every few days and saves can break between them. The stable line, UL 2.6.17, remains on Alpha 20.7.

Q: Where do the Undead Legacy files go, the Mods folder or the game folder?

The game's root folder, the one holding 7DaysToDie.exe. Subquake's instruction is to copy the files from the archive into the root folder of the game, not the Mods folder, because UL ships a loader and runtime files that have to sit beside the executable. On a dedicated server the same applies: the archive carries BepInEx, Mods and the loader files, and you set EACEnabled to false in serverconfig.xml. Installing into Mods/ is the most common reason the mod appears to do nothing.

Q: Can I play Undead Legacy with console friends?

No. Undead Legacy is a PC-only overhaul and disables EAC, so it is not crossplay-capable. Everyone must be on PC, on the same game branch, with the same build.

Version & compatibility (updated 6 October 2026): Undead Legacy has two live lines. The experimental line, currently UL 2.7.40 (2026.09.28), runs on game V2.6 b14 and ships as a two-part download, and both parts are required - this is the first modern-branch UL since 2022 and it updates every few days. The stable line is still UL 2.6.17 (2022.11.25), pinned to Alpha 20.7 b1, complete and unchanging. Pick a line, then pin the matching game branch in Steam, or the mod will not load. Since V3.3.0 became Steam's default on 5 October 2026, a fresh install of 7 Days to Die is on 3.3, so pick v2.6 in Steam's Betas tab before you install UL 2.7.x. Subquake's plan for the 3.x line is a compatibility-only UL 2.8, with the content he had planned for 2.8 moving to 2.9 (his announcement of 12 June 2026); no date has been given. Undead Legacy

Undead Legacy is a comprehensive 7 Days to Die overhaul created by Subquake. It is not a mod you add to a vanilla save. It replaces the user interface, the way you carry things, the way you unlock recipes and the way you progress, and it has been in development since the Alpha 16 era.

Three changes define it. Every item and block has a weight, so your inventory is limited by what you can carry rather than by slots alone, with a 300-slot ceiling and proper sorting and search in inventory and storage. Perks no longer hand you schematics or raise your crafting tier; recipes come from a Research system instead. And Action Skills level from what you actually do, alongside overhauled attributes and perks.

Around that sit a rebuilt crafting and material progression, hundreds of new items, blocks, recipes and vehicles, a lockpicking minigame, player-crafted electrical lights with full RGB customization, and a more physical world: water sources need jars, fuel barrels and pumps need fuel cans, and many of the damaged vehicles lying around the map can be fully repaired rather than scrapped.

How progression works in Undead Legacy

This is the part that surprises returning vanilla players, so it is worth reading before you start a world. In Undead Legacy you do not buy your way to a recipe with perk points.

The practical consequence: plan for a long game. Undead Legacy is paced for players who want the early tiers to mean something, which is also why it does not load into a vanilla save.

Research data in Undead Legacy: how the research tree works

Undead Legacy moves most recipe unlocks onto a research tree, and the currency is research data. The base resource is Basic Research, which the mod itself calls "a collection of valuable research data": gather enough of it and you spend it at a Research Station to unlock new recipes. Read from the files of the 2.7.40 build we host, the tree has 595 research nodes.

Where Basic Research comes from: loot, where the research loot group drops 1 to 50 at a time, and recycling books at the recycler, which turns each book into 5 to 10 paper plus 2 Basic Research.
Research Station: its recipe is unlocked from the start and it researches tier 1 technologies and blueprints. Researching Research Station (Tier 2) costs 500 Basic Research, 25 books and 10 paper.
Specialised research data: Engineering, Advanced, Tools/Melee, Ballistics, Armor, Biology and Chemistry Research are resources of their own that later nodes ask for. Engineering Research is the most demanded, an ingredient in 193 nodes. Each one is made at the powered Data Resequencer, 50 at a time from 100 Basic Research and a book (Advanced takes 200 and two books), once its own node is researched: researching Biology Research, for example, costs 50 Basic Research, 50 yucca fibers, 20 raw meat and 20 rotting flesh.
Data Resequencer: a powered station that turns one form of research data into another. Researching it takes the first Electrician research and costs 500 Basic Research, six desktop PCs, 4 scrap wires, 2 circuit boards, 20 forged iron, 40 nuts and bolts and an LCD screen.

Undead Legacy 2.7 or 2.6.17: which line should you install?

There are two live Undead Legacy lines and they are not interchangeable. Each one is pinned to a different 7 Days to Die branch, so this choice decides which game version you pin in Steam.

Whichever you pick, every player and the server must run the same line and the same build. A client one build ahead of the server is the single most common reason an Undead Legacy server refuses connections.

Installation and Compatibility

Important: Undead Legacy does not install into the Mods/ folder. Subquake's own instruction is to copy the files from the archive into the root folder of the game, not the Mods folder, because UL 2.7 ships a loader and runtime files that sit alongside the game executable. It also requires both client and server installs for multiplayer. Back up your saves first, and keep a separate copy of the game if you also play vanilla.

How to download and install Undead Legacy

Undead Legacy itself is free. Download it from Subquake's official download page or through the 7D2D Mod Launcher. Because each UL line is pinned to one game branch - experimental UL 2.7.x to V2.6, stable UL 2.6.17 to Alpha 20.7 - version-matching is the whole job:

Back up your saves, then plan for a fresh world - as a total overhaul, UL will not load into a vanilla save.
Pin the matching game branch in Steam (right-click 7 Days to Die → Properties → Betas): V2.6 for experimental UL 2.7.x, or the A20.7 beta for stable UL 2.6.17. Since 5 October 2026 Steam installs V3.3.0 by default, so this step is not optional on a fresh install.
Download both parts of the experimental archive. Subquake ships UL 2.7.x in two files and both are required; the stable 2.6.17 line is a single download.
Copy the archive contents into the game's root folder - the folder holding 7DaysToDie.exe - not into Mods/. That is Subquake's own instruction, and it is the step most guides get wrong. UL 2.7 ships a loader that has to sit next to the executable. The 7D2D Mod Launcher handles this for you if you would rather not do it by hand.
Launch with EAC off and start a new game.

Keep a separate copy of the game. Because UL installs into the game root rather than Mods/, it will interfere with vanilla and with other overhauls in the same install. Use a second copy of 7 Days to Die if you want to switch back and forth.

Running Undead Legacy on a dedicated server

For multiplayer the mod goes on the server and every client, all on the same line and the same build. The flow mirrors a vanilla dedicated server setup: SteamCMD-install the dedicated server, then pin it to the branch your UL line needs, then unpack the UL server archive into the server's root folder.

The server archive is more than a Mods/ folder, which is why a plain mod upload does not work:

Linux: BepInEx, Mods, doorstop_libs, doorstop_config.ini and run_bepinex_server.sh. Start the server with run_bepinex_server.sh, not the plain start script. Subquake also has you append <dllmap dll="dl" target="libdl.so.2"/> to 7DaysToDieServer_Data/MonoBleedingEdge/etc/mono/config.
Windows: BepInEx, Mods, doorstop_config.ini and winhttp.dll.
Both: set <property name="EACEnabled" value="false"/> in serverconfig.xml. UL cannot run with EasyAntiCheat on, which is also why UL servers are PC-only and not crossplay-capable.

Loaded in but cannot move, or "Subquake_Items.ulm failed: File not found"

That is part 2 missing. With only the first half of UL 2.7.x installed, the game loads UL's code without its config and assets: you spawn into the world but cannot move or interact, the log reports Subquake_Items.ulm failed: File not found, the UI is vanilla, and the toolbelt holds the vanilla starter items instead of UL's bug-out bag. Subquake's answer in the Undead Legacy Discord (5 October 2026) is the same every time: download both parts and copy the contents of each into the game's root folder. A folder named UndeadLegacyExperimentalPart1-main sitting in the root means the files went one level too deep. If files are already mixed in, reinstall the game on the v2.6 branch and copy both parts again. On a dedicated server the same rule applies to the server archive, and every player needs both parts on their own PC as well.

What It Actually Changes, Measured

These numbers are counted from Undead Legacy's own configuration files in the first 2.7-line build we hosted (UL 2.7.01), not from its changelog; we now host 2.7.40 and the counts have moved on since. 7 Days to Die overhauls work by patching the base game with XPath operations, so the mod files are a literal list of every change it makes.

Get a server with Undead Legacy Mod

Updating from 2.7.27 or later

Subquake publishes a patch from 2.7.27 to 2.7.40 next to the full download. It is only for installs already on 2.7.27 or later; anything older needs the full two-part download. Subquake's download page also carries two warnings for this update: a save older than 2.7.35 can break, so make a backup first, and pick up your powered workstations (Cement Mixer, Sawbench T1 to T3, Data Resequencer, Electric Furnace, Blast Furnace, Powered Stove and Powered Table Saw) before you update. On a dedicated server, patch the server and every player's game to the same build.

Undead Legacy FAQ

What is the latest Undead Legacy version? UL 2.7.40, dated 28 September 2026, for game V2.6, per Subquake's download page. The older UL 2.6.17 (25 November 2022) is still the Alpha 20.7 line. 2.7 builds come out often, so check the download page before you update a server.

Does Undead Legacy work on V3.0 to V3.3? No. Undead Legacy's newest line targets game V2.6, and the stable line is on Alpha 20.7, so neither runs on a 3.x build - not V3.0, not V3.1 "Henpocalypse", not V3.2 and not V3.3, which became Steam's default on 5 October 2026. Subquake's plan for 3.x is a compatibility-only UL 2.8, with no date yet. Pin the game branch your UL line needs, which also means you cannot join a 3.x server while you do. Does Undead Legacy work on V2.6? Yes. Subquake's experimental line - currently UL 2.7.40 (2026.09.28) - runs on game V2.6 b14 and ships as a two-part download where both parts are required. It is genuinely experimental: builds land every few days and saves can break between them. The stable line, UL 2.6.17, remains on Alpha 20.7.

Where do the Undead Legacy files go, the Mods folder or the game folder? The game's root folder, the one holding 7DaysToDie.exe. Subquake's instruction is to copy the files from the archive into the root folder of the game, not the Mods folder, because UL ships a loader and runtime files that have to sit beside the executable. On a dedicated server the same applies: the archive carries BepInEx, Mods and the loader files, and you set EACEnabled to false in serverconfig.xml. Installing into Mods/ is the most common reason the mod appears to do nothing.

Is Undead Legacy dead? No, and it is no longer stuck either. Subquake shipped an experimental UL 2.7.x line for game V2.6 - the first modern-branch build since 2022 - and it is updating every few days. The complete, highly polished UL 2.6.17 on Alpha 20.7 is still there if you want a build that will not move under you.

Is Undead Legacy free? Yes. The mod itself is distributed free by Subquake through his official download page and the 7D2D Mod Launcher, so there is no reason to pay anyone for the files.

How do I install Undead Legacy? Back up your saves, pick a line, pin the matching game branch in Steam (V2.6 for experimental UL 2.7.x, A20.7 for stable UL 2.6.17), download both parts of the archive, copy the contents into the game's root folder rather than Mods/, launch with EAC off, and start a fresh world.

Can I play Undead Legacy with console (Xbox / PS5) friends? No. UL is a PC-only overhaul and disables EAC, so it is not crossplay-capable. Everyone must be on PC, on the same game branch, with the same build.

Why did Undead Legacy 2.7 move from game 2.4 to 2.6? Because The Fun Pimps removed the option to downgrade to 2.4 on Steam in July 2026, so Subquake moved UL 2.7 to V2.6 straight away (his announcement of 29 July 2026). Old branches do disappear: as of 5 October 2026 Steam lists v3.3.0, v3.2.0, v3.1.0 and v2.6 among the recent branches, and there is no 3.0 branch. If you play UL 2.7, keep the game on v2.6 and do not let Steam move it to the default.

How do you get research data in Undead Legacy? Basic Research drops from loot, up to 50 at a time, and comes back from recycling books, 2 per book. You spend it at the Research Station; once you have researched a specialised kind such as Engineering or Biology Research, the powered Data Resequencer makes it 50 at a time from 100 Basic Research and a book (see how the research tree works).

I loaded in but cannot move. What is wrong? Part 2 of UL 2.7.x is missing: the UI and starter toolbelt are vanilla and the log reports Subquake_Items.ulm failed: File not found. Download both parts and copy the contents of each into the game's root folder (see the fix above).
